Sandakan, Sabah

Sandakan, Sabah’s second largest town, has an estimated growing population of 370, 000 people. A new landmark is soon to dominate the skyline of Sandakan. The RM380 million Sandakan Harbour Square is a grand and impressive project developed on a bay of reclaimed land at the waterfront, right in the midst of the central business district of Sandakan.
Sandakan Harbour Square is the first large-scale commercial development in this town in 30 years, taking up over 12 acres. The mega-project is a joint development project between Saracorp Resources Sdn Bhd, Ireka Corporation Bhd and the Sandakan Municipal Council (Majlis Perbandaran Sandakan or MPS). Sandakan Harbour Square is designed to be an integrated commercial, retail, hotel and recreational development around the ‘harbour’.

The project features a Central Market, Shopping Mall and a spacious Harbour Square, which is the heart of the development, and connects to a waterfront promenade (Esplanade) complete with modern and landscaped pedestrian malls. The combined Harbour Square and the Esplanade covers over 1.5 acres of land and is slated to be the focal point of the development where it is expected to be a much sought-after area for festivities and leisure activities by the people.

In addition to engaging a foreign consulting firm to work out a feasibility study and development plan for the project, an international design competition was organised by the developer on behalf of the Sandakan Municipal Council, who was also one of the judges. The winning entry was submitted by Arkitek MAA Sdn Bhd (MAA), one of the top architectural firms in Kuala Lumpur.
