Dato’ Dr. Zawawi Ismail, Chairman

Dato’ Dr. Zawawi gained both his bachelor and doctorate in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Leeds, England. He is a Foundation Fellow of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia, a Professional Engineer and a Member of the Institute of Engineers Malaysia, and an Honorary Fellow of The Institute of Physics Malaysia. He served as its President for many years.

Zawawi was the first Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas), a position he held until end of 2000. Other previous appointments include Foundation Director of CIMB Commerce Leadership Institute, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, and Dean of Engineering of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, and Deputy DG Malaysian Institute of Microelectronic Systems (now, Mimos Bhd). He still maintains links with higher education through being Chairman of the Board of Directors of Universiti Sains Malaysia and of Inti International University. He is also Deputy Chairman of Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA), and serves on the Advisory Boards of Academic Leadership Academy (AKEPT) of the Ministry of Higher Education and of the National Razak School of Government.

Dr. Zawawi had served several national bodies including National Information Technology Council, National Aerospace Council, National Scientific Research and Development Council, and National Higher Education Council. He was once advisor to both the National Science Centre and National Planetarium.

Zawawi is currently Executive Chairman of Exclusive Harmony Resources Sdn Bhd and serves on several corporate boards including CIMB Bank Berhad, Commerce Asset Ventures Sdn Bhd, Inti Universal Holdings Berhad and Sara Timur Sdn Bhd.

Kenneth K. Y. Tiong, Deputy Chairman & Managing Director

Kenneth K. Y. Tiong is a building engineer, and a graduate from Bristol Polytechnic (now known as University of West England). He has more than 35 years experience in the international and Malaysian construction industry.

In 1973, he began his career with Taylor Woodrow International LTD in London. Having gained construction management experience in the UK, he was later transferred to the Middle East and Malaysia. Kenneth joined William Jacks & CO in 1980 as Building Manager responsible for building products sales and distribution throughout West and East Malaysia. He was later engaged by global building products manufacturers, Hunter Douglas and Sika Kimia as General Manager-Director, responsible for the establishment of their manufacturing, marketing and sales divisions in Malaysia.

In 1991, Kenneth founded the Corpro Group of Companies, primarily involved in construction and property development which he managed until 1998. During this period, he also partnered with Nishimatsu Construction LTD, Japan to undertake major projects such as Palace of The Golden Horses, KLCC Basement Car Parks, KLIA Airport infra-works, Sarawak Stadium and Sutera Harbour Hotels and Resorts.

He later joined the family construction and property development business as CEO for Syarikat Charng Sheng Sdn Bhd. In 2002, he formed Ireka-Charng Sheng Sdn Bhd, a joint-ventured company with Ireka Corporation Bhd to undertake the RM480 million Urban Renewal Development Project, Sandakan Harbour Square in Sandakan, Sabah. This mega-project has been praised by local and state officials. It also won the CNBC-Asia Pacific Property Award in 2009.

Throughout the years, Kenneth has personally identified and driven many civil engineering, building construction, property development and urban renewal projects in East and West Malaysia.

Lee Yik, Project Director

Lee Yik has been with Sara-Timur Sdn Bhd since September 1999, as a Contract Manager, until he was appointed as the Executive Director in April 2001. Prior to this, he was the Quantity Surveyor for Nishimatsu-Corpro Construction (M) Sdn Bhd for more than two years. Lee’s career began with appointments as the Trainee Site Surveyor for Corpro Construction (M) Sdn Bhd, Quantity Surveyor for KM Engineering & Development Sdn Bhd and then the Trainee Contract Officer for Baharudin Ali & Low Consultants. Mr. Lee received his Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Quantity Surveying from the John Moores University, Liverpool, UK.

He is currently overseeing the Lagenda Tunjong Development, as Project Director, since he joined the team in 2013. The new urban development in Kota Bharu, Kelantan, is sited on 40 acres (16 hectares) of prime land within the 2000 acre, Bandar Baru Tunjong, township in greater Kota Bharu. This landmark development is a modern, new urban lifestyle haven to be undertaken in 7 phases, spread over the next 5 years, ready to set Kelantan as a fully integrated urban community hub.

Stephen Tennant, Projects Advisor

Stephen Tennant is a leading Asian based, construction project management practioner with over 35 years experience of successfully managing the commercial and delivery aspects of major construction and infrastructure contracts in Asia and around the world. He is a Chartered Quantity Surveyor & Chartered Building Professional, and has provided direction and commercial leadership for some of Asia’s largest infrastructure and building projects.

His expertise includes Strategic Development and Planning, Procurement Systems, Contract Formulation, Joint Venture Arrangements, Insurances, Contract Administration, Project Management, Quantum, Project Finance, Infrastructure, Gaming Resorts, Hotels, Airports, Railways, Bridges and Dispute Resolution.

Stephen is a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors and Member of the Australian Institute of Building amongst other professional qualifications held. He is a graduate of the University of the West of England and is an Accredited General Mediator with the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre.

He is also the Managing Director, Steve Tennant Consultancy Ltd, Hong Kong, 2008 – Present. His significant experience of leadership, innovation, change, project & commercial management, negotiation and dispute resolution at corporate, board, JV, project and personal levels with clients in Hong Kong and internationally on a personalised consultancy basis.

He was appointed South-Eastern Corridor (PMC) Sdn Bhd, Chief Executive Officer Designate from 2007-2008. Responsible on a consultancy basis for setting up PM systems, budgets, consultant management and provision of project management services for Mersing Laguna, a USD1b resort and urban renewal project being developed by Mersing Laguna Sdn Bhd, majority shareholder of South-Eastern Corridor (PMC) Sdn Bhd.
